SASSA Decline Reason: 'Deceased Record on DHA' — What to Do
SASSA's system shows you as deceased according to Home Affairs records. Learn how to correct this serious data error.
What This Decline Reason Means
When SASSA checks your ID number with the Department of Home Affairs, their database shows your ID as belonging to a deceased person. This is a serious data error — either Home Affairs has incorrect records, or someone fraudulently reported you as deceased.
Common Triggers
Home Affairs has a data error linking your ID number to a deceased person
A family member mistakenly reported you as deceased (common with estranged families)
Identity theft — someone used your ID to fraudulently claim benefits and reported you as deceased to cover their tracks
How to Fix It
Visit your nearest Home Affairs office
This cannot be resolved online. You must go to a Home Affairs office in person with your ID document.
Request a 'Living Person Confirmation'
Ask Home Affairs to verify that you are alive and correct the database error.
Get written confirmation
Obtain a signed letter from Home Affairs confirming you are alive and the deceased record was an error.
Present to SASSA
Take the Home Affairs letter to your nearest SASSA office along with a new SRD application.
Appeal Deadline
90 days from the date of decline
Success Rate
High once the Home Affairs record is corrected. Expect delays — this process can take 2 to 4 weeks.
