SASSA Decline Reason: 'Existing SASSA Grant' — What It Means & How to Resolve
You cannot receive the SRD grant if you are already receiving another SASSA grant. Learn about the one-grant rule and what to do.
What This Decline Reason Means
SASSA's system shows that you are already receiving another social grant — such as Old Age Pension, Disability Grant, Child Support Grant, Foster Child Grant, or Care Dependency Grant. South African law does not allow you to receive more than one SASSA grant at the same time (with limited exceptions for foster parents).
Common Triggers
You are already receiving the Old Age Pension or Disability Grant
You are the primary caregiver receiving the Child Support Grant
Someone applied for a grant using your ID number without your knowledge
There is a data error linking your ID to another person's grant
How to Fix It
Check which grant you are receiving
Call the SASSA helpline at 0800 60 10 11 and ask which grant is linked to your ID number.
Compare grant amounts
If you are receiving a permanent grant (R2,400 for Old Age/Disability), it pays much more than the SRD (R370) — you are better off with the permanent grant.
Report fraudulent applications
If someone else used your ID to apply for a grant, report it to the SASSA fraud hotline immediately.
Appeal Deadline
No appeal needed — this decline is usually correct. Apply for the correct grant type instead.
Success Rate
This decline is usually accurate. Only appeal if you believe a grant is fraudulently linked to your ID.
