SASSA Decline Reason: 'Identity Verification Failed' — What It Means & How to Fix
Your name or ID number does not match Department of Home Affairs records. Learn why this happens and how to correct it step by step.
What This Decline Reason Means
SASSA compared the personal details you submitted (name, surname, ID number) against the Department of Home Affairs database and found a mismatch. This is a security measure to prevent identity fraud. The mismatch could be caused by a simple typo, a name change after marriage, or an error in Home Affairs records.
Common Triggers
A typo in your name or surname during application
You used a nickname instead of your full legal name
Your surname changed after marriage but was not updated at Home Affairs
Home Affairs has incorrect records for your ID number
Your ID document was recently issued and has not synced to all databases
How to Fix It
Check your name on the SRD portal
Log into srd.sassa.gov.za and verify that your name and surname are spelled exactly as on your ID document. A single letter difference can cause this decline.
Correct name/surname online
Use the 'Request Names and Surname Update' tool on the SRD website if the spelling is wrong.
Complete biometric verification
If you received an SMS with a facial recognition link, complete it within 72 hours.
Visit Home Affairs if needed
If your ID records at Home Affairs are incorrect (e.g., listed as deceased, wrong surname), visit a Home Affairs office in person to correct the error.
Appeal Deadline
90 days from the date of decline
Success Rate
High if the cause is a simple typo or name mismatch — fix the details and reapply. Lower if Home Affairs records themselves need correction.
