Step-by-Step Instructions
1
Submit Your Appeal (Day 0)
The appeal process starts when you submit your appeal on the ITSAA portal at srd-appeals.dsd.gov.za. You can also appeal via the SASSA WhatsApp line or Moya App. Your appeal must be submitted within 90 days of the decline. After submission, you will receive a reference number. Write this down — you need it to track your appeal. One appeal per month, one month at a time.
Pro Tip
- Submit your appeal as early as possible — do not wait until the 90-day deadline.
- Take a screenshot of the confirmation page showing your reference number.
2
Acknowledgment Receipt (Day 1–3)
Within 1 to 3 working days, you should receive an SMS or email confirming that the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals (ITSAA) has received your appeal. This acknowledgment includes your appeal reference number. If you do not receive this within 5 days, contact the SASSA helpline to confirm your appeal was logged correctly.
Pro Tip
- The acknowledgment SMS comes from ITSAA, not from SASSA.
- If you changed your phone number, the SMS will go to your old number — check the portal instead.
3
Case Assignment & Review (Day 7–30)
Your appeal is assigned to an independent tribunal member. The tribunal member reviews: your original application, SASSA's reason for decline, and any evidence you submitted with your appeal. The tribunal may request additional information from SASSA. During this period, your appeal status on the ITSAA portal will show as 'Appeal Pending'. No action is needed from you — you are waiting for the tribunal's decision.
Pro Tip
- Do not submit a second appeal during this period — it slows down the process.
- The tribunal is independent of SASSA, so they can overrule SASSA's decision.
4
Decision Issued (Day 30–60)
The tribunal makes a decision: Appeal Approved or Appeal Declined. If approved, ITSAA notifies SASSA to process payment. If declined, the letter explains why. You will receive an SMS with the outcome. You can also check the ITSAA portal using your reference number. If your appeal is approved, SASSA will pay you for the declined month within 7 to 14 working days.
Pro Tip
- An approved appeal means you receive back pay for that specific declined month.
- If your appeal is declined, you can request reasons in writing from ITSAA.
5
What If Your Appeal Exceeds 90 Days?
If your appeal has been pending for more than 90 days, you can escalate. Call the SASSA helpline at 0800 60 10 11 and ask for a status update on your appeal. You can also contact the Department of Social Development directly at 012 312 7726. If the delay continues, visit your nearest SASSA office with your reference number and ask them to follow up with ITSAA.
Pro Tip
- Keep a log of every call — note the date, time, and who you spoke to.
- Legal Aid South Africa (0800 110 110) can assist if your appeal is unreasonably delayed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my SASSA appeal taking more than 90 days?
High volumes of appeals (over 1.2 million applications were declined in early 2026) cause delays. The tribunal processes appeals in order of receipt. If yours is taking longer, call 0800 60 10 11 and ask for a status update.
Can I check my SASSA appeal status online?
Yes. Go to srd-appeals.dsd.gov.za, enter your ID number and reference number, and you will see whether your appeal is Pending, Approved, or Declined.
