Step-by-Step Instructions

1

Documents Required for ALL Grant Types

These documents are required for every SASSA grant application, regardless of which grant you are applying for: (1) Your 13-digit South African ID book or Smart ID card (original + copy). (2) Proof of residence — a utility bill, bank statement, or lease agreement dated within the last 3 months. (3) Your cellphone number (must be RICA-registered in your name). (4) Proof of income — payslips, bank statements, or an affidavit if you are unemployed. Have these ready before your appointment.

Pro Tip

 • Make copies of every document before going to the SASSA office — not all offices offer copying services.
 • Keep your original documents in a separate folder from copies to avoid losing them.
2

Additional Documents for SRD R370 Grant

The SRD grant is applied for online, so you do not need physical documents. However, you need: (1) Your 13-digit ID number (you do not need to upload the ID document). (2) A valid, active cellphone number registered in your name (for OTP verification). (3) Your banking details — bank name, account number, branch code. If you do not have a bank account, you can select Cash Send collection at Pick n Pay or Boxer.

Pro Tip

 • The SRD is the only SASSA grant that does not require any physical document submission.
 • Your banking details must match your ID exactly — a single digit error will delay payment.
3

Additional Documents for Old Age Grant

For the Old Age Pension (R2,400/month), bring: (1) Your 13-digit ID book or Smart ID card (original). (2) Proof of residence (utility bill in your name). (3) Proof of marital status (marriage certificate, divorce decree, or death certificate of spouse if applicable). (4) Proof of income and assets — pension statements, bank statements, property valuations. (5) Your spouse's ID copy if married (their income is included in the means test).

Pro Tip

 • Apply 3 months before your 60th birthday to avoid a payment gap.
 • If you are married, your spouse's income affects your eligibility — bring their documents too.
4

Additional Documents for Disability Grant

For the Disability Grant (R2,400/month), you need: (1) Your 13-digit ID document. (2) A medical assessment report from a government doctor (not a private doctor) confirming the disability. (3) Proof of residence. (4) Proof of income and assets. The medical report is the most critical document — without it, the application cannot proceed. The report must be dated within 3 months of your application.

Pro Tip

 • The medical assessment must be done at a government hospital or clinic — private doctor reports are not accepted.
 • If your disability is temporary (less than 6 months), apply for the SRD instead.
5

Additional Documents for Child Support & Foster Child Grants

For the Child Support Grant (R580/month per child): the child's birth certificate, your ID, proof of residence, proof of income. For the Foster Child Grant (R1,290/month): the child's birth certificate, the children's court order placing the child in your care, your ID, proof of residence, proof of income. The court order is mandatory for the Foster Child Grant — a letter from the child's parent is not sufficient.

Pro Tip

 • You can apply for the Child Support Grant while pregnant — the grant starts after the child is born.
 • The Foster Child Grant court order must be issued by a children's court, not a maintenance court.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to bring original documents or copies?

Bring both. SASSA staff need to see the original documents and will keep copies. Some SASSA offices offer copying services, but not all — make copies before you arrive.

Can I apply for a grant if I have lost my ID document?

No. You need your original ID book or Smart ID card to apply. If you lost your ID, apply for a replacement at the Department of Home Affairs first. This can take 2 to 8 weeks.
