How to Use the Moya App for SASSA SRD: Status Checks & Banking Updates
The Moya App is a free data-free messaging platform that now offers SASSA SRD services. Learn how to check your status, update banking details, and appeal using Moya.
Step-by-Step Instructions
1
Download and Install the Moya App
Go to the Google Play Store (Android) or Apple App Store (iOS) and search for 'Moya App'. The app is developed by biNu and is free to download. Moya offers free data for certain services, including SASSA SRD, meaning you can check your status without using your mobile data. This makes it especially useful for users who cannot afford data or have run out of airtime.
Pro Tip
- The Moya App is about 15MB to download — use WiFi if you are worried about data costs.
- Make sure your phone number is the same one you registered with SASSA.
2
Find the SASSA SRD Section
Once installed, open Moya and look for the 'SASSA SRD' or 'SRD Grant' section on the home screen or in the services menu. The app has a simple, icon-based interface. Tap on the SASSA SRD icon to open the service. If you do not see it immediately, use the search bar at the top and type 'SASSA'.
Pro Tip
- The Moya App interface may change with updates — the SASSA section is usually near the top.
- Treat srd.sassa.gov.za as the authoritative source for your status — the app should show the same information.
3
Check Your SRD Grant Status
Inside the SASSA section, select 'Check Status'. You will be prompted to enter your 13-digit South African ID number. After entering it, your current SRD status for the most recent month will be displayed. The app shows the same information as the official srd.sassa.gov.za portal but in a simpler, mobile-friendly format.
Pro Tip
- The Moya App shows only the latest month's status — use the SRD portal for your full history.
- You do not need to re-enter your ID every time — Moya saves it securely.
4
Update Your Banking Details via Moya
A key feature of the Moya App is the ability to update your SASSA banking details directly. Select 'Update Banking Details' from the menu. Enter your new bank name, account number, and branch code. The account must be registered in your name. Submit the update and wait for confirmation. This is often faster than using the SRD portal for banking changes.
Pro Tip
- Double-check your account number — a single wrong digit will cause payment failures.
- Bank updates via Moya usually take 3 to 5 working days to be verified.
5
Submit an Appeal Through Moya
You can also submit a SASSA SRD appeal using the Moya App. Go to the 'Appeals' section in the SASSA menu. Select the month you want to appeal, choose the reason for your decline, and write a short explanation. The app submits your appeal directly to the Independent Tribunal (ITSAA). You will receive a reference number for tracking.
Pro Tip
- Keep your reference number — you need it to check your appeal status.
- The Moya App appeal process is identical to using the ITSAA website.
