How This Payment Method Works

Direct bank transfer is the most common way SASSA beneficiaries receive their grants. Your monthly payment is deposited straight into your South African bank account. You can use any major bank — Absa, FNB, Standard Bank, Nedbank, Capitec, TymeBank, or Postbank — as long as the account is registered in your own name and the holder name matches your ID document exactly. Once your banking details are verified on the SRD portal, SASSA pays directly and you can track the 'Paid' status on your account.

How It Works

  • You provide your bank account number, branch code, and account holder name during application or when updating details

  • SASSA verifies the account against your ID before payment

  • SASSA releases the payment in a batch, and the money reflects in 1 to 3 business days

  • You see a 'Pay Day' date on your status once the batch is scheduled

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I receive my SASSA grant in any bank account?

Yes, as long as it is a South African bank account registered in your own name, and the account holder name matches your ID exactly. All major banks — Absa, FNB, Standard Bank, Nedbank, Capitec, TymeBank and Postbank — can receive SASSA payments.

Why is my status 'Bank Details Pending'?

It means your application is approved in principle but SASSA cannot verify your banking details. Update your details on the SRD portal and verification usually completes within 3 to 7 working days. See our full guide at /status/bank-details-pending.

How long does it take for the money to reflect?

After your 'Pay Day' date, bank transfers usually reflect within 1 to 3 business days depending on your bank.

Can I change my bank details at any time?

Yes. Log into the SRD portal and update your banking details. Make sure the account is in your name, and update it well before payment batches run to avoid delays.

Are you choosing a bank for your grant?

SASSA does not require a specific commercial bank. If you're comparing low-fee accounts available in South Africa, explore your options.
