What Is the Grant-in-Aid?
Eligibility Requirements
• You must already be receiving an Old Age Grant or Disability Grant
• You must require full-time attendance from another person due to your condition (cannot be left alone)
• Your condition must be confirmed by a medical report from a government doctor
• You are not already receiving a similar grant or living in a state-funded institution
The Grant-in-Aid is not means-tested — it is based entirely on your medical need for a caregiver. If you qualify, you receive the full R580 regardless of your income or assets.
How to Apply
Get a Medical Report
Visit a government hospital or clinic and ask for a medical assessment confirming that you require full-time attendance from another person. The medical report must specifically state that you cannot be left alone and need a caregiver.
Visit Your SASSA Office
Go to your nearest SASSA office with your ID document and the medical report. Inform the officer that you want to apply for the Grant-in-Aid. You will need to complete the application form.
SASSA Home Visit
SASSA will send an official to your home to verify your living situation and confirm that you need a caregiver. The official will also speak to your caregiver.
Receive the Outcome
SASSA aims to process Grant-in-Aid applications within 60 days. If approved, the R580 is added to your existing grant payment from the date of application.
