Budget 2026: R36.4 Billion Confirmed for SRD Grant — Grant Amounts Increase April 2026
The 2026 National Budget delivered on February 19 confirmed significant funding for South Africa's social grant system. The SRD R370 grant received a dedicated allocation of R36.4 billion, securing payments through to 31 March 2027.
New Grant Amounts from April 2026
Permanent grants received increases ranging from 3.6% to 3.7%, effective 1 April 2026:
| Grant Type | New Amount (April 2026) | Previous Amount | |---|---|---| | Old Age Grant (60-74) | R2,400 | R2,315 | | Old Age Grant (75+) | R2,420 | R2,335 | | Disability Grant | R2,400 | R2,315 | | War Veterans Grant | R2,420 | R2,335 | | Foster Child Grant | R1,290 | R1,250 | | Child Support Grant | R580 | R560 | | Grant-in-Aid | R580 | R560 | | SRD Grant | R370 (unchanged) | R370 |
What This Means for Beneficiaries
While permanent grant recipients received a modest increase, the SRD grant remains frozen at R370 for the third consecutive year. The government has indicated that a transition to a Basic Income Support (BIS) grant is being considered for after March 2027.
SRD Grant Extension Confirmed
Crucially, the Budget confirmed the SRD grant will not end in 2026. Beneficiaries who were worried about the grant expiring can rest assured — payments will continue through the 2026/27 financial year.
