SASSA Launches New WhatsApp Self-Service Channel for SRD Beneficiaries

SASSA has launched a dedicated 24/7 WhatsApp self-service channel for COVID-19 SRD beneficiaries. Check your status, get payment dates, and access information without calling the helpline or visiting an office.

How the WhatsApp Service Works

The SASSA WhatsApp channel allows SRD R370 grant applicants to:

  • Check application status — instantly see if your grant is Approved, Pending, or Declined
  • View payment dates — find out when your next SRD payment is scheduled
  • Get banking details status — confirm whether your bank account has been verified
  • Access FAQ answers — get instant responses to common questions

How to Use the Service

  1. Save the SASSA WhatsApp number to your phone contacts
  2. Send a WhatsApp message starting with "Hi" to initiate the conversation
  3. Follow the menu prompts to select the information you need
  4. Enter your ID number when prompted to receive personalised status information

Why This Matters

The WhatsApp channel is designed to reduce the massive volume of calls to the SASSA helpline (0800 60 10 11), which has been overwhelmed since the Integrity Rollout began. It also helps beneficiaries who cannot easily visit SASSA offices due to distance, disability, or work commitments.

Important Security Notice

SASSA will never ask for your bank PIN, password, or OTP via WhatsApp. The service only asks for your ID number — which it already has on file. If anyone claiming to be SASSA asks for sensitive banking information on WhatsApp, it is a scam.

Limitations of the WhatsApp Service

While the WhatsApp channel handles basic enquiries, complex issues still require human assistance:

  • Grant reviews and life certification must still be done through the eLife portal or at a SASSA office
  • Appeals against declined grants must be lodged through the official appeal process
  • Banking detail changes still require verification through the SRD portal
