SASSA Decline Reason: 'Self-Correction Required' — What It Means & How to Fix
SASSA needs you to correct your own details after missing a biometric or verification step. Learn how to complete self-correction and avoid a decline.
What This Decline Reason Means
SASSA requires you to complete a self-correction step — usually a biometric (facial recognition) verification or an update to your personal details — before your grant can continue. This status appears when you were flagged for enhanced security checks or when your details need to be confirmed by you. If you do not complete the self-correction within the given window, your status may move to 'Declined.'
Common Triggers
You missed a biometric verification SMS link and did not complete it in time
Your identity could not be verified automatically and needs your confirmation
You were asked to correct a name or surname mismatch
You need to submit updated residence or bank information
How to Fix It
Check your SMS for a link
SASSA typically sends a biometric verification link by SMS. Open it within the validity window (often 72 hours).
Complete the facial verification
Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the facial recognition process using your phone.
Update your personal details
Use the 'Request Names and Surname Update' tool or update your residence information if asked.
Check your status after completing it
Once the self-correction is complete, your status should update within a few days.
Appeal Deadline
90 days from the date of decline
Appeal Guidance
Self-correction is usually successful if you complete the biometric or detail update quickly. If you miss the window, appeal and explain what happened.
