SRD Reapplication: When You Must Reapply and When You Must Not

You apply for the SRD R370 once - SASSA reassesses you every month. This guide explains the only times you really do need to reapply (status 'reapplication_required'), how to do it at srd.sassa.gov.za, and why a declined month needs an appeal, not a new application.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1

You Apply Once - SASSA Reassesses Every Month

The SRD R370 application stays active after you submit it. You do not reapply each month. What happens every month is an automated recheck of your circumstances: your bank account deposits, UIF records, NSFAS status, SARS records and Home Affairs identity details. If nothing changed, you stay Approved. If something is flagged, you go to Declined for that month only. Your status flipping between months is normal, not a cancellation.

Pro Tip

  • Check your status after the 15th of the month for the most reliable result.
  • Approved in one month does not guarantee Approved in the next - circumstances are rechecked.
2

A Decline Is Not a Cancellation - Appeal, Don't Reapply

If SASSA declines you for a month, submit an appeal, not a new application. SATSA declines carry a reason code (income source detected, identity verification failed, UIF registered, NSFAS registered and others). Read the code, then appeal that specific month at srd-appeals.dsd.gov.za within 90 days. Successful appeals are paid back pay. Reapplying when you are simply declined creates duplicate applications, which can flag your account and delay a genuine application.

Pro Tip

  • One appeal per declined month - each month is a separate case.
  • Appeals are free and take about 60 to 90 days.
3

The One Status That Means You Really Must Reapply

If your status on the SRD portal shows reapplication_required (also seen as 'Reapplication Pending'), SASSA no longer holds an active application for you. That is different from a decline - it means your application lapsed, timed out or was administratively reset. Common causes: a compulsory reapplication window you did not refresh, an internal application expiry, a platform migration that did not carry older applications across, or a cancellation after a period of ineligibility (for example a UIF period). This reason cannot be appealed - the fix is a fresh application.

Pro Tip

  • Not sure why you were reset? Check your status on srd.sassa.gov.za before acting.
  • Reapplication_required is one of the few reasons where reapply, not appeal, is the correct move.
4

How to Reapply Step by Step

Go to srd.sassa.gov.za and sign in with the same 13-digit ID number and cellphone number you used before. Submit a new application and answer every question honestly - the system cross-checks your answers against government databases. Since September 2025 the grant also uses biometric verification, so complete the facial scan or fingerprint step within the 72 hours if you are prompted, otherwise the application can stall. Then check your status around the 15th.

Pro Tip

  • Use the exact same ID number and phone number as your old application.
  • Do not create a second profile - reuse the one already on file.
5

What Reapplication Does and Does Not Give You

A successful reapplication restores your grant from the current month's assessment onward. It does not automatically back-pay the months your application was lapsed. If some of those lapsed months are still inside the 90-day appeal window, appeal those months as well - in some cases SASSA has approved backdated payments for declined months even after a reapplication. Approved grant amounts flow to the payment method on file, so keep your banking details up to date too.

Pro Tip

  • Appeal declined months alongside reapplying instead of waiting to see what happens.
  • Back pay is decided per month and per appeal - it is not automatic.
6

Keep Your Application Active and Healthy

Future resets are avoidable. Keep the cellphone number on your file current so SASSA can notify you and code your OTPs. Use one bank account and make sure nobody else's deposits push you over the R624 income line. Complete biometric verification within 72 hours when prompted. Update your details honestly when your situation changes. And never pay an agent to reapply for you - the official portal is free.

Pro Tip

  • Lost your phone number? Update it on the SRD portal (see our phone-number guide).
  • A single stranger depositing into your account can tip you over the threshold.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to reapply for the SRD grant every month?

No. You apply once and SASSA reassesses your eligibility automatically every month. Reapply only when your status tells you to, such as 'reapplication_required'.

I was declined this month - should I reapply?

No. A declined month is not a cancellation. Read the decline reason on the SRD portal and appeal that month within 90 days at srd-appeals.dsd.gov.za if you disagree. Reapplying instead can cause duplicate applications.

What does the 'reapplication_required' status mean?

It means SASSA no longer has an active application for you - usually because it lapsed, timed out or was administratively reset. It is not an eligibility decline and cannot be appealed. You need to submit a fresh application at srd.sassa.gov.za.

How long does a new SRD application take to process?

A few weeks in most cases. Check your status on the SRD portal after the 15th of the month. First you see Pending, then Approved with a Pay Day, or Declined with a reason.

Will reapplication back-pay the months my grant was lapsed?

No, not automatically. Reapproval applies from the current month's assessment. If declined months are still within the 90-day appeal window, appeal them separately for possible back pay.

Can I reapply if I cancelled my SRD application myself?

Yes. Go to srd.sassa.gov.za and submit a new application with the same ID number and phone number. Your eligibility is then reassessed from the current month.
