What This Status Means

'Alternative Income Detected' means SASSA's system identified income flowing into your accounts that it believes should disqualify you from the SRD grant. This can include gifts, family transfers, stokvel payouts, refunds, or informal trade — SASSA does not distinguish between 'income' and 'money you received.' If your total monthly deposits exceed R624, you may be declined with this status. You can appeal if the money was not regular income.

Why It Happens

  • A stokvel payout was deposited into your account

  • You received a UIF payment or NSFAS stipend

  • Someone used your bank account for their own transactions

  • You do informal work that pays irregularly into your account

What To Do

1

Review Your Bank Statements

Identify every deposit in the declined month, including gifts and transfers.

2

Lodge an Appeal

Go to srd-appeals.dsd.gov.za, select the declined month, and explain what each deposit was.

3

Provide Supporting Evidence

Upload bank statements and, if a family member sent money, include a signed affidavit explaining it was a gift.

4

Prevent Future Declines

Use a separate account for SRD only, or ask family to give you cash instead of electronic transfers.

How Long It Takes

Appeals are processed within 60 to 90 days. If successful, you receive back pay for the incorrectly declined months.
