SASSA Grant Comparison 2026: Which Grant Should You Apply For? SRD vs Old Age vs Disability vs Child Support

With eight different SASSA grant types available, many South Africans are unsure which one to apply for. This guide compares all grants so you can choose the right one.

Quick Comparison Table

| Grant | Monthly Amount | Age Range | Means Test | Apply Online? | |---|---|---|---|---| | SRD R370 | R370 | 18-59 | Income under R624 | Yes | | Old Age Pension | R2,400 (R2,420 75+) | 60+ | Income under R7,190 | No | | Disability Grant | R2,400 | 18-59 | Income under R7,190 | No | | Child Support | R580 per child | Under 18 | Income under R5,800 | No | | Foster Child | R1,295 per child | Under 18 (or 21 if studying) | Not means-tested | No | | Care Dependency | R2,400 | Under 18 (severe disability) | Income under R18,600 | No | | Grant-in-Aid | R580 (supplement) | Any age needing care | Not means-tested | No | | War Veterans | R2,420 | WWII/Korean War vets | Income under R7,190 | No |

Decision Guide

  • If you are 60+, apply for the Old Age Grant — R2,400 is far more than SRD's R370
  • If you have a medical disability, apply for the Disability Grant — same R2,400 rate
  • If you care for a child, the Child Support Grant pays R580 per child
  • If none of the above, the SRD R370 grant is your option

Important: One Grant Rule

You cannot receive two SASSA grants at the same time (except foster parents with a separate foster grant). Choose the highest-value grant you qualify for.
