SASSA Urges Beneficiaries to Stop Changing Payment Details So Often
By SASSA Help Hub Team
Independent Unofficial Resource
On 7 October 2026 SASSA warned beneficiaries against unnecessary and frequent changes to their payment method or bank details, saying it can cause delays and even return a payment.
Why It Matters
- Every change must be verified before your next payment is processed.
- If you change details close to your payment date, the change may not be processed in time and your payment can be rejected or returned.
- Wrong or unactivated bank accounts are a common cause of failed payments.
When Changing Is Fine
Change your payment method when it genuinely needs to change — for example a new bank account, a lost card, or switching between bank transfer, Postbank or cash send. Just do it well before your payment week, not during it.
How to Avoid a Rejected Payment
- Make changes early — ideally at least a few weeks before your next pay date.
- Double-check the account number and branch code are correct and that the account is active and in your own name.
- Confirm the change was captured on the SRD portal (srd.sassa.gov.za) or with a SASSA official.
- Don't switch repeatedly between methods in the same cycle.
- If a payment is already missing, work through our missing payment guide or phone the SASSA helpline on 0800 60 10 11.
