1.2 Million SRD Applications Declined in June 2026: Breakdown of Reasons & How to Appeal

According to data released by the Department of Social Development, over 1.2 million SRD R370 grant applications were declined in June 2026. While this number sounds alarming, the majority of declines are due to automated system flags that can be resolved through appeal.

Breakdown of Decline Reasons

| Decline Reason | Estimated % | What It Means | |---|---|---| | Income Source Detected | ~60% | Bank deposits exceeded R624. Includes gifts, stokvel payouts, family transfers. | | Identity Verification Failed | ~15% | Name/ID mismatch with Home Affairs. Often a typo or outdated surname. | | UIF Registered | ~10% | Old UIF record still active from previous employer. | | NSFAS Registered | ~8% | University financial aid record still active after graduation. | | Other | ~7% | Age range, existing grant, government payroll, deceased record. |

What You Need to Do

If your application was declined, do not give up. The SRD grant is assessed afresh every month, and a decline in June does not affect your July application. However, to receive back pay for June, you must appeal within 90 days.

How to Appeal

  1. Go to the ITSAA appeals portal
  2. Select the month that was declined
  3. Choose your decline reason and provide an explanation
  4. Submit and note your reference number

How Long Does an Appeal Take?

The Independent Tribunal (ITSAA) takes between 60 and 90 days to process appeals. If your appeal is approved, you receive back pay for all declined months. See our appeal timeline guide for the full breakdown.
